Planning a trip is not often easy, especially when you are a mother of three and have a household, job and responsibilities to manage. I took some tips from other experts who have been or are in Italy and we have laid this basic itinerary out to make sure we have a great trip.
As mentioned in our “4 Things to Know before visiting Italy” post here is our basic itinerary with links to helpful resources.
- Venice
- Bridges – wander on the bridges and get lost!
- Water taxi – Try to ride the locals water taxi. It’s less expensive and its what the locals do.
- St Mark’s Square (Bell Tower)
- Rialto Bridge
- Gondola Ride
- Dogeis Palace
- Bridge of Sighs
- St. Mark’s Basilica
- Dolomites
- Hike between alpine huts.
- Cycling, climbing or hiking.
- Via Ferrata
- Lake Toblach
- Swimming holes: Gerdevol
- Florence
- Santa Croce Church
- Duomo – steps up to see the city? (Santa Maria del Fiori)
- Pisa
- Leaning Tower
- Baptistry & Cathedral
- Camposanto Monumentale

- Pantheon (Raphael buried here)
- Trevi Fountain
- Capuchin Crypt – bones of dead capuchin
- Largo di torre Argentina – Where Julius Ceser murdered here.
- LDS Temple Site
- Pompeii
- Herculaneum
- Like Pompeii but a less touristy option with similar artifacts and history but better preserved
- because of less traffic.
- Mt Vesuvius – volcano that buried Pompeii and surrounding cities.
- Cinque de Terre
- Small villages that you can hike between that have colorful homes along the coast.
- Gelato
- No this isn’t another state or city this is Italian ice and experiencing it at every gelato shop you see is a must. I expect it is a little bit different than our Ammon, ID based Italian Ice shop but I expect that to be proven because Rita’s Italian Ice is spot on tasty.
We leave soon but would love your recommendations of where we should go, what we should do and how we should do it. We love the adventure and doing something new. This is our chance because its rare that we get a few days let alone a few weeks away from the kiddos as we venture off to Italy! Wahoo!!
